Belltown Crime Increases

SPD has released the June crime statistics and we did a little number crunching to reflect the downtown beats into a year over year graph. As you can see, it’s not an encouraging set of data. Crime is on a generally increasing line, especially petty theft.

  1. It looks to me like an annual cycle, with many more thefts in summer months than winter (perhaps because people leave windows open more?) and no trend at all in other crimes – I think it just looks like an increasing trend because the chart’s time series starts in winter and ends in summer. Could you do one for a longer time series with a whole number of years perhaps? That would clear this up.

  2. I can release some more charts late today. But, if you take a look at the chart from June 08 – June 09 you can see there’s nearly a 100 incident increase in thefts alone.

The bright spot in all of this is that the other crime categories remain nearly the same, except for seasonal variances like you point out.

  3. Theft is a crime of opportunity. Is there more opportunity because there are more people living and visiting in the neighborhood? That might be interesting.

  4. If you just pick two months to compare, it’s very easy to be misled. If we pick May 2008 vs May 2009, it looks like thefts are _down_. That’s why we need a larger timespan to see if there’s really a trend, especially when there’s a month-to-month variation of +/- 75.

I’m not saying you’re wrong, just that there isn’t enough data here to draw a meaningful conclusion.
